Targa GBR 2018 - Day 2
Day two, and Mary and Craig were looking forward to stretch the legs of the Mustang and try to catch up on some time lost from day one. They stages were still very challenging tricky, needing full concentration and care.
The first stage, Upper Barron, was a tough start. A 6km narrow run through some light country house areas and we cleaned the stage with no penalty points. The second stage is Lake Eacham and we had a great run, finishing only 7 seconds off the leaders. We were feeling confident as we were settling in, and the Mustang was performing beautifully.
On to Glenn Allyn with 8km of tricky crests and gravel - need to stay focused. Unfortunately a slightly wrong positioning of the Mustang and we lost grip, which resulted an excursion over one of the left corners that was off camber, and a spin and left us bellied and bogged on the side of the road. Unfortunately this means we dropped one stage, so that puts an end to our outright placing. The upside is the Mustang is not damaged (apart from a flat tyre) and a tow from a the course officials kept us in the event.
After bolting on two new wheels Mary and I were back in the competition, albeit with a slightly different approach. A little bit coy, we settled back into the groove carefully. Needless to say, we thought the next two stages weren’t our best, though we were fourth fastest on both, so not too slow after all!
Lake Morris 2 was an uphill ru and we were fifth. At the top the food was laid on once again, and the last run for the day was downhill on Copperlode 2. We finished the stage fourth fastest. To put our placing in perspective after losing a stage we are second last - a quick drop from 4th outright - but still mixing it with the leaders on each stage. Mary and I will have a great time effectively recce'ing the stages at race pace, so on to the finish!
