Targa Tasmania 2017 - Day 5

Good day all, it rained all night in Strahan and the forecast is 34% showers, so not how we wished the day would pan out :( The Shelby GT is prepared the best we can for these conditions. The competition rules give us tyre restrictions of 6 tyres only and they are marked at the start of the event to be used at your discretion, but must be roadworthy at at the start of all stages. Our choice was the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2's as these work well on the Shelby and are a good all round tyre - perfect for us in the dry and would last the event. We replaced the fronts on the 5th day of racing, since it has been raining, and they have lasted well.

Targa Tasmania 2017 - Day 2

Being Anzac day, the only stage run was George Town, which is a quick 4.8km blast around town. It was a dry, beautiful day for showing the Shelby GT through the streets. Racing at 2.30pm, the crowd was pleased to see the Mustang, and we handed out posters to the locals and other fans.

Targa Tasmania 2017 - Day 4

Targa Tasmania Day 4 runs from Burnie to the west coast with a lunch break in Stanley. No rain in sight when we got out of bed this morning. A home cooked breakfast, cereal and poached eggs on toast - Terry and Kath have excelled once again. The first stage of the day, Montumana, is 3.8km with lots of gravel and more marbles. There is one crest into a right turn where a few messed it up and overshot or ran into the bank. We almost did, too, but dropped a good broadslide for the spectators and got through unscathed fourth fastest.

Targa Tasmania 2017 - Day 1

Overnight in Launceston, the heavens opened and the first day of racing looks to be wet wet wet. Our first stage - Kayena - is a non competition shakedown stage. Stages like this are designed for us to settle into the event gently, especially for the newcomers. After Stage One is the dangerous Sideling, which is very slippery when wet - 14km of it! We were told by the locals that this rain is the first for four weeks, so this makes it even more slippery than usual.

Targa Tasmania 2017 - Day 3

There was rain overnight in Launceston before Leg 3 of Targa Tasmania 2017. With the Shelby in 8th position, we were looking to pick up the pace and move closer to the pointy end of the GT2 competition. The day started out with damp roads from the Silverdome, but as we headed west the roads dried out and this put a smile on our faces. Kate and I were raring to go, and the Shelby was fuelled and roaring.

Targa Tasmania 2017 is here

The last three days Kate and I have travelled over 2500km to check out the beautiful Tasmanian scenery, and check out our rally notes for accuracy. The weather has been perfect and, as always, God puts on the splendor of creation - just magnificent! I have spent more time in Tassie than anywhere else exept home in Victoria,  and it has been great to catch up with our Targa family and to meet some new faces. Albert and Aaron - our crew - brought the Shelby down on the Spirit on Saturday morning and scrutineering was all done yesterday. The Shelby was cleaned and is readied for the Expo, and for Monday's racing.
